Moving Places This Fall? What Are the Most Commonly Forgotten Steps During Your Move?

When you move, it’s easy to make mistakes because the whole process can be overwhelming. From trying to find the best interstate moving companies to remembering to close accounts on time, it’s a lot. Do yourself a favor and keep this list in mind to avoid commonly forgotten steps during a move.

1) Always Hire a Reputable Moving Company

You might be tempted to go with the most inexpensive option, but the reality is that you get what you pay for when it comes to moving companies. You want to find a good moving company, so take a little extra time. It’s worth it in the end when you’re unpacking your things and nothing comes up broken.

2) Don’t Go With the First Quote

One of the biggest steps people forget is to get multiple moving company quotes. If you get a single quote, you might luck out and pay a decent rate. On the other hand, since you didn’t compare quotes, you’re probably not paying the best price you could have gotten. Always remember to compare quotes from multiple companies and ask them about discounts. Some of them offer fantastic deals, but you’ll never know if you stop at the first quote.

3) Ask All of the Questions

Another step people tend to forget is asking the movers the right questions or asking any questions at all. When you hire a moving company, you want to make sure you pick one that will be capable of the job. That means you need to ask questions about the company’s history, liability insurance if they break something, their process, how far in advance you need to book a move, and anything else you can think of. Ask all the questions upfront so you don’t end up with surprises on the back end.

4) Don’t Wait to Purge Your Home

In theory, if you have an apartment, you don’t have as much stuff to move as someone who lives in a house. That’s no excuse to wait to purge your home before moving. Do yourself a favor and get rid of stuff you don’t need. Otherwise, you’re stuck moving all the things that could be donated or thrown away, which means higher moving costs. Moving those unwanted things costs more money, so it’s in your best interest to get rid of what you can beforehand.

5) Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Procrastination is an art, or at least that’s what you tell yourself when you’re running around on your fifth cup of coffee trying to get stuff done at the last minute. Don’t do that when you’re planning a move. If you do, you’re going to push yourself to get things done and then miss something you would otherwise see. Instead, make a checklist of things you have to do and create a timeline for yourself. Follow it, and your move will be much easier.

6) Don’t Forget to Label Boxes

Nothing tests your memory like unlabeled boxes after a move. You think you’ll remember where everything is, but as soon as it ends up in your new apartment, those ideas go out the window. Without labels, you’re going to find your coffee pot in the bathroom or your favorite robe in the kitchen. Label boxes as you pack so you don’t forget what is inside. It makes it much easier to sort them in your new home, too.

7) Don’t Use the Wrong Boxes

There is such a thing as using the wrong box, especially when it comes to heavy items. You might think you’ll use a big box to pack all of your lovely books. The problem is that when you lift the box, or try to, you’re dealing with a hefty package. Instead, pack heavy items in smaller, more manageable boxes, and pack light things like pillows and comforters in the big boxes.

8) A Few Final Thoughts

Any time you move, you’re likely to forget steps along the way. It’s normal because you’ve got a million things going through your head. Make yourself a list of things you need to get done and check them off as you go. Remember to hire the right company after comparing multiple rates. Don’t forget to ask questions to help you decide on the best choice. You also don’t want to wait to purge your home or pack at the last minute. The stress isn’t worth it. Remember to label your boxes and pack your items appropriately, and you’ll be well on your way to an excellent moving experience.
